De la Vega tells financial analysts, investors: ‘Great age of wireless’ is just ahead, AT&T strongly positioned to lead

May 16, 2008
AT&T Ralph De La Vega is always good on offering up some good info, this time he hints at a sooner then we think BlackBerry Bold Launch.

Our industry is in the very early stages of a “wireless data revolution,” AT&T Mobility President and CEO Ralph de la Vega told analysts and investors at Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Communications Conference last week.

Following are excerpts from de la Vega’s Q&A session with financial analysts, which followed his prepared remarks.

You mentioned the BlackBerry Bold and 3G iPhone. How should we be thinking in terms of timing for these devices?

We recently announced the BlackBerry Bold. We’re not commenting on any other iPhone plans at this point. But I think there is an exciting future for all of as we look for great devices on a great network that will drive further penetration of wireless data services.

Devices in general will facilitate the move to what I call the data revolution. The devices we’re seeing today and on the roadmap for the future have faster processors, more memory. They are all broadband-enabled with 3G, have GPS, and will facilitate customers using these devices in ways that drive more usage, which for us typically means more revenue. We think there is a huge upside to mobilizing data, making great quality data that is easy to use, accessible to the customers in ways in which they have never seen before.

Is the BlackBerry Bold a Q2 or Q3 launch?

We love the device and will launch it as soon as possible. We’re taking it through its final paces and making sure everything works well on our network. When you look at our portfolio of devices, whether it’s the BlackBerry, the iPhone or a number of other devices, we have the best portfolio in the market.
